UPDATE : TARC 2020 Has Been Postponed to 2021 due to COVID-19

Check out TARC 2021 Competition Updates to learn more information on what this means for your TARC team.

Every year approximately 5,000 students from across the nation come together to out-think and out-fly their fellow competitors for a chance to win a share of $100,000 in scholarships and prizes in the school-year long endeavor – The American Rocketry Challenge (TARC).

Under the watchful eye of our nation’s greatest aerospace entrepreneurs, engineers, astronauts and government officials; some of our brightest students will bring scientific and mathematical principles to life as they design, build and launch their custom-made model rockets. Only the top 100 teams will make it through to the national fly-off in Washington D.C. Only one team will represent the United States in London for the International Rocketry Challenge! Are you ready to take your team to TARC?

A few changes have been made for 2021 National Finals to maintain safety while keeping the competition engaging.

  • RULES: The only change is how the National Finals will be held and new deadlines. Detailed information about the rules can be found below or on the TARC website.
  • IMPORTANT DATES: The National Finals will now take place in mid-late June 2021 allowing teams some extra time to build and launch their rockets. The new deadline for qualification flights is now May 17, 2021. A virtual awards ceremony will take place on June 28, 2021.
  • LOCATIONS: The 2021 National Finals will occur at ten or more regional launch sites in order to limit the number of people that gather at any one site and to minimize team travel requirements. Regional launch sites will be selected based on the location of this year’s finalists.
  • NEW PRIZES & ADDED VIRTUAL COMPONENTS: Given the new structure of the 2021 contest, there are new prizes including Best in Launch Site ($1,000) and Best First Time Finalist ($2,500). There are also 3 virtual competitions this year including Presentation, Marketing, and Kerbal Rocketry Challenge. Presentation Competition requires teams to explain their engineering and design choices (win up to $3,000, due May 7). Marketing Competition require teams to submit a video that inspires and excites the audience about rocketry and custom designed logo (win up to $3,000, due May 31). Kerbal Rocketry Challenge is a video game competition requiring contestants to apply real-world astrophysics and rocket science in a virtual environment (win up to $6,000 and takes place in July).

TARC can seem overwhelming to a person taking part for the first time. To help students, team captains and mentors be more at ease we have curated and collected the best information, supplies and resources available to help acquaint you with what you can expect throughout this year-long challenge. If you’re ready to take on TARC, we’re ready to help you meet your goals.
