First Crew To Launch From U.S. Soil In Nearly A Decade

SpaceX Capsule
NASA astronauts Bob Behnken (left) and Doug Hurley rehearse their Demo-2 test flight on a SpaceX Crew Dragon spaceflight ahead of a May 27, 2020 launch to the International Space Station.

On May 27, a Falcon 9 will lift off from Kennedy Space Center launch pad 39A with two NASA astronauts aboard to kick off a day of firsts. It will be the first commercial rocket to carry a crew to orbit, the first to launch from U.S. soil in nearly a decade, and the list goes on. But there’s one first for this flight no one at NASA is looking forward to – no spectators!

All rocket launches draw a crowd, and historic flights can be counted on to fill the roadways and beaches surrounding the Florida launch site with onlookers. But not for this launch. For the first time, NASA is actively warning rocketry fans to stay away. Blame the spread of the novel coronavirus and social distancing guidelines on this one. NASA administrator Jim Bridenstine advises the public to “watch from a place that’s not the Kennedy Space Center… join us in this launch, but… do so from home.”

So let’s gather – virtually – around our screens on launch day and cheer America’s latest space faring accomplishment and NASA’s return to flight!

Payload Rockets

ROCKETS AND PAYLOADS

The Falcon 9 is a two-stage rocket designed to carry payloads to low earth orbit. The payload for the May 27 launch is the Crew Dragon spacecraft with two NASA astronauts aboard. Certain Estes rockets are also designed for payloads.

Model rocket payloads can be for fun (lights, small toys), for science (altimeters, trackers), or even for competition. In
an “egglofting” contest competitors launch a raw egg to a specific altitude and must recover it unbroken. It’s not easy!

Which Estes payload rocket are you going to build and fly?
