A disappointing shadow of a legendary Model - Please bring back the original

I don't normally leave reviews, but I felt compelled after opening this box and realizing what Estes has done to the once-glorious Space Shuttle Rocket (EST 1284).

I grew up in the 80s, and the original Estes Space Shuttle - the full stack with orbiter, external tank, and solid boosters - was one of the most impressive and rewarding kits I ever built. It wasn't just a rocket; it was a real project. You built it from scratch. You painted it. You aligned everything perfectly so that when it launched, the shuttle would glide back to earth while the boosters came down on a parachute. It was majestic, challenging, and unforgettable.
Fast forward to now, and I find the Estes 3227 - a pre-built, styrofoam-like shuttle with none of the craftsmanship, none of the detail, and none of the engineering that made the original so iconic. The "glide" is laughable at best. The booster is an afterthought. And the whole thing feels like a toy rather than a tribute to one of the most historic spacecraft of our time.
I understand today's market leans more toward Ready-to-Fly kits, but you've replaced an incredible builder's experience with a cheap-feeling, uninspired product that barely honors its namesake. For those of us who grew up dreaming of space, this isn't it.
To Estes: You have a loyal base of builders and collectors who would GLADLY pay for a reissue of the original shuttle kit- the full stack, with glide recovery, and real build process. Please consider bringing it back, even as a limited release or commemorative edition. The 3227 doesn't hold a candle to what you used to make. And honestly, it's heartbreaking.

Thank you for your review. We're disappointed to hear that your experience was less than satisfactory. Please contact our customer service team at service@estesrockets.com so we can better understand your concerns and help resolve any issues.

Great Flyer! But Be Careful!

Overall this is a great RTF model, although it is VERY PRICEY. It looks great on display, and actually flies very well. Balancing the Shuttle was very easy. I marked the bottom of the shuttle where the instructions told me to, taped a string to it, and added clay to the well, and then removed clay till the shuttle was level. My well is about 1/3rd filled with clay.
The biggest disapointment I have is how thin the SRB tube are. You have to be VERY CAREFUL not to hold onto them while inserting or removing the Fin Units. They will not support that. Now I got a small crease in my SRB. Oppsie. Best to grip the stack by the Booster Nozzles when dealing with the fins. I also ran into a problem the first time I went to install a motor. The end of the BT-20 was not clean. Was very rough. I had to use a knife to "Debur" the motor tube on field by carefully removing the raised edges of the motor tube to get the motor to fit. Only other "complaint" is the glider only has one attachment point, which is addequite to hold the shuttle on the stack in flight... however, with the slightest breeze the shuttle wants to move off to the side. Looks GREAT on display in my office, which was a big reason I overlooked the price tag when I added one to my cart.
