This 3 inch diameter version will deliver the long slow lift-offs that Red Max is famous for. Imagine 3.5 seconds of smoke and fury on an Estes F15-4! And Big Red is not just fun on the flying field, he’s fun to build too. Thru-the-wall fins make assembly and alignment easy while giving this rocket extra strength so you can fly it over and over. And only Red Max rockets come with their own special printed Skull & Bones 18 inch parachute.

Nice up-scale to a favorite! Only downside are the “decals” Never been a fan of peel and stick. For the $, waterslide would be great. Still a cool rocket! For those who can’t figure out the decal placement, or building the fins, must have missed the “Advanced” rating. Good Job, Estes!

I just got done building this and am very happy minus the stickers. Water slide decals would have been much better. The large, wrap-around sticker was impossible to line up and the clear plastic of the stickers are very noticeable.

One of the most expensive rockets you will ever own. You will replace the 3 pieces to make 1 fin with an aftermarket plywood single fin – because the whole 3 pieces to make 1 fin just doesn’t make sense and you expect a single fin with Estes. You will also come to release the that decals are lack luster and you will purchase a set of high quality decals from another aftermarket vendor. End the end, the only original parts will be the nose cone and body tube.

This is another nice Estes kit, but I really don’t like those cardboard centering rings on a kit this large. At a minimum they should be reinforced with a layer of balsa; it’s easy to trim back to the size of the cardboard, but adds significant strength and “glueability” without undue weight. Also, reinforce the large 3-piece balsa fins with at least a layer of graphite tissue, and use PS II elastic instead of the rubber band shock cord. Alternatively, if you want to use composite motors in this rocket, just swap out both fins and rings for birch aircraft plywood. You can find such things on eBay. Then you’d also want to swap out the parachute and shock cord for a nice PS II nylon chute and a length of kevlar tied to PSII elastic shock cord, and add more nose weight. Voila! Composite-capable PS II. Whichever way you decide to go, you WILL like your DBRM kit. Two thumbs up!
